It has stood here proudly since 1806, and while its stalwart commitment to tradition is impressive, what is more extraordinary is its huge whisky collection - currently standing at over 300! This includes rare Scottish single malts and blends and some brilliant real bourbons, as well as what must be among the finest selection of Japanese whiskies in Manchester.
The interior is a maze of six conjoined rooms (two of which are home to roaring log fires) plus a sheltered terrace with tables for warmer days, while the food served is uncomplicated pub fayre (really good pies). The Briton’s Protection has a very loyal following of beer and whisky lovers - but it’s also the kind of place you can nip into after a long day and give a sigh of relief that it’s nearly Friday… especially on cold, dark Manchester evenings when the pub does seem to offer the hearty, welcoming protection of the title!
The prices are very reasonable for such a central location, but the quality is still good - and they have two function rooms available to hire, which also host occasional gigs, comedy nights and pub quizzes.
